Soviet Walking Simulator
A downloadable game for Windows and Linux
This is a small interactive diorama with a self-contained world, made in 7 days. The theme was brutalist apartment buildings, and the world features a pair of multi-story buildings to explore along with the courtyard connecting them. Old newspapers flutter and fall from the sky, settling around the fountain and on the trees.
The world has physics, shadows, sounds, and a day-night cycle. There are a number of interactive objects around the world, including:
- clocks
- curtains
- doors
- light switches
- trash bags
- the trash bin
- a shopping cart
- flying newspapers
- 10 almost identical apartments
- and more!
Supports keyboard and mouse or gamepad controls, with a third-person camera. The linux build is compatible with the Steam Deck as well. You can pause the game or the day/night cycle for screenshots. Press the C key to disable the control overlay for a more cinematic experience.
Known issues:
- you can get stuck on the stairs if you turn sideways while walking up or down.
- physics can glitch and launch you into the air.
- particles (water, newspaper, sparks) move while paused.
If you get stuck or leave the map, press the R key or Y button to reset your position.
I wanted to try making something with the Godot engine, but I only had a rough idea of the theme that I wanted to use. I gave myself a 7 day time limit to design the world, create the models, and develop a game. This is what I ended up with. It's not really a game because there is no objective, but it is a small, interactive world.
Models were created in MagicaVoxel and exported using Blender with a script to adjust UV coordinates. Some procedural textures were applied, with stock images for the skies and the newspapers.
